TENNIS

The 2009 Tennis season was the most successful season that I have coached.  With the assistance of Andy Berg, we were able to emphasize the basics of the game.  Marla Ham, Ashton Scarborough and Josh Hamilton made it to the South State Tournament at Brookhaven while Marla also advanced to State Championship.

To be eligible to play tennis, you must be in grades 7-12 and eligible academically according to the handbook.  Practice begins when basketball has been completed.  Practice is at the public tennis courts located next to the Columbia Library from 2:15 to 3:30.  The bus will be taking students to the court but you must have a parent pick you up by 3:30.  There is a sign up sheet in Ms. Sheryll’s office.

The biggest problem that I have faced as the coach is having to share the public courts with 3 other schools.  This makes practicing difficult to the students who do not have 7th period athletics.  By the time they arrive at the courts, they only have about 20 minutes to practice.  I realize the money that it would take to build courts at the school, but I think it is something that needs to be considered in the future.  Scheduling home matches are very difficult between the 4 schools.
